2007 was a very successful year for Kogarah High School. Students performed well in all areas. Our sporting teams and individual sports people won a number of premierships and gained individual honours. Our academic performance at all levels was excellent. Many physical improvements have been carried out and our enrolment for 2008 is very healthy. In fact we now have a waiting list in some years.

This has been achieved by some hard work over many years by our staff, P&C, parents and our students. It’s this community team effort that is very pleasing.

Congratulations to all concerned and a safe, happy festive season.

VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS

Before you buy school uniform please ensure that it meets school requirements. The uniform code has been developed over the years and reflects the views of staff, students and parents. Most importantly aspects of the uniform have been put in place for safety reasons. Students are aware that we take pride in our uniform and neat, tidy appearance reflects a positive image to the public and says that we are serious about our education. Students are also aware that if they are out of uniform they will be on detention.

The following is the ONLY acceptable uniform:

GIRLS UNIFORM
BLOUSE* White with collar
SKIRT* Grey and Maroon Plaid All seasons
PANTS* Grey
JUMPER Maroon wool with crest $60.00 )
JACKET Junior	Maroon with Gold Stripes $40.00 )
Senior	Maroon with Gold Stripes $62.00 ) available from school
TIE Junior Maroon with gold stripes $22.00 )
Senior Black with gold stripes $22.00 )
SOCKS White
SHOES Black
NOTE shoes must be black leather and cover the top of the foot or enclosed. “Ballet” style shoes are not acceptable. Lace-ups are the safest option.

BOYS UNIFORM
SHIRT* White with collar
TROUSER*: Grey
JUMPER Maroon woolen $60.00 )
JACKET Junior	Maroon with Gold Stripes $40.00 )
Senior	Maroon with Gold Stripes $62.00 ) available from school
TIE Junior Maroon with gold stripes $22.00 )
Senior Black with gold stripes $22.00 )
SHOES Black
NOTE shoes are to be black leather lace-ups NO canvas slip-ons.

SPORTS/PE UNIFORM

SHIRT Gold s/sleeve $15.00 )
				l/sleeve	$17.00 ) available from school
SHORTS Black $12.00 )
TRACK PANTS	Black $20.00 )
SOCKS White
SHOES Sport Shoes

The above is our uniform and only these items are to be worn. Jumpers and jackets MUST have our school crest. It is also important to remember that T-shirts under the uniform that are visible are not to be worn.

SCHOOL BAGS
On average school textbooks cost over $50 each so protecting them is very important. The school cannot replace them year after year. Consequently we require students to buy a proper school bag. Some girls have been using “handbags” as school bags and their own and the school’s books have been damaged. This as far as the school is concerned reflects poorly on the school and the individual. It says that the student is not serious about their education and takes little pride in their work. Please make sure that proper school bags are purchased.

DURING THE HOLIDAYS -

CHEWING GUM

During the break we are having years of chewing gum build-up removed at a significant cost. Chewing gum on desks, on the ground, etc is both ugly and un-hygienic. Chewing gum is not allowed in our school and with everyone’s cooperation we can make our learning environment much better. So don’t be surprised or complain if students who chew gum at school are asked to clean it up (with gloves and scraper).

MOBILE PHONES

I feel the need to once again outline the school policy.

The school takes no responsibility for the loss or theft of mobile phones.

If YOU choose to have a mobile phone at school you must:

Turn it off once you enter the school.
Not use it during school time.

If you need to contact a parent you have to come to the Front Office and use the school phone or ask for permission from the Principal or Deputy Principal to use your mobile phone in the office area only.

If a parent needs to contact a student it must be done through the school office.

If a mobile phone rings in class, in the playground, sport, etc or if a teacher sees you with a phone it will be confiscated no matter who owns it and given to the Deputy Principal. Students can collect it after school.

If you argue or refuse to comply with the request you will be directed to the Deputy Principal or Principal.

If this happens your phone will be withheld until the problem is worked through with a parent.

It is also VERY, VERY important for all students to understand that taking pictures of other people WITHOUT their permission is a CRIMINAL OFFENCE. The school WILL report the matter to the Police as directed by the Department of Education & Training. Text and internet bullying will be treated the same.

I have spent some time in explaining these issues because we as a school community think they are important. Following these rules will keep people safe, show pride in themselves, their work and their school. It will develop a sense of common purpose and maximise learning.

YEAR 11 SPORT

In 2008 Year 11 students wil do sport on Wednesday afternoon. So make sure you keep your PE uniform or be prepared to purchase one when you come back to school.

CANBERRA EXCURSION

On the 29th and 30th of November 62 students from years 8, 9,10 and the IEC attended an overnight excursion to Canberra.

The students were separated onto two buses and the excursion started.

We went to different places in the Canberra triangle, for example, Questacon, War Memorial and Parliament House.

At night, we came back to NSW to stay in a very comfortable Inn called Comfort Inn. Even though the inn was comfortable it was very small, and the staff was friendly. We had breakfast there, as well as dinner, the meals are very nice, but we had to clean up afterwards. After dinner students went to their rooms (groups of 4) and had free time.

Lights out was at 9.00 pm, however everyone stayed awake past 12 am. The groups of friends hung out and played games, ate food and had fun all night long. Everyone was either watching TV or playing cards.

On Friday afternoon we went to the Australian Institute of Sport and saw all the fabulous facilities for sport people.

One of the favourite spots was Mc Donalds on route to and from Canberra.

We want to thank the teachers that supervised the excursion and hope we have anoth trip next year.
                                       Year 9

THANK YOU TO “BUNNINGS” ROCKDALE AND THE “GOOD GUYS” ROCKDALE

All the staff and students of Kogarah High are grateful for your generosity and sponsorship of the new coffee shop which has been set up by the staff and students of the Support Units (Hearing) and IM.

Hope to see you at our fabulous coffee shop in the future

KOGARAH HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER
December 2006
» view html newletters

We can look back on 2006 and say well done to all. Our students performed well in all aspects of education. The external exams (such as ELLA, SNAP, external competitions, School Certificate) all indicated growth in performance and in some areas exceptional success. There was a sharp improvement in attendance helped considerably by our SMS system and the monitoring of the Welfare Team. There is, as we know, a high correlation between attendance and academic success. We will continue and intensify our efforts in 2007.

On the sporting field, I’m pleased to report that all our teams were competitive and the girls 14 and 15 years volleyball teams (the winter and summer competitions) and the 14 years table tennis won Premierships but equally important was the commitment and sportsmanship displayed by students representing Kogarah High School. Our participation in gala days and state knock out competitions was both impressive and varied. We participated in a lot more competitions. Student involvement in extra curricula activities such as chess and debating was considerable and brought praise and credit to the school.

In the area of student leadership we consolidated the considerable achievements of 2005. The prefects and the SRC raised $600 for UNICEF, $1,100 for Shave for a Cure and $635 for Cancer. While a thorough analysis of the School Certificate results has not been possible at first glance they look very good and a further improvement on past years. The quality of our academic performance and more importantly our willingness to do our personal best is most encouraging.

I would like to acknowledge and thank the efforts of our P&C under the leadership of Violet Roumeliotis. They have been active and have helped us gain much needed funds for a number of projects to the value of over $250,000. While they are a small group they are high in quality.

Similarly all the staff have again performed to an exceptional standard and have expertly prepared our students for examinations and for life in general.

Our Deputy Principals, Mr Tindale and Ms Cacciotti have handled their jobs with expertise, sensitivity and great commitment. They have been especially helpful to me and have made my job a lot easier.

Parents are an important part of the equation and I thank you all for entrusting us with your children and being both supportive and cooperative. I look forward to working with you in 2007.

I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very prosperous New Year. F Carosi Principal
