Languages

‘…achieving proficiency in other languages is one of the great learning experiences in the human condition… the compelling reasons for learning languages reside in the intellectual enrichment of the individual learner- a better understanding of the world, Australia’s place in it, and the many communities within Australia.’

(Australian Language and Literacy Council)

At Kogarah High School we offer Year 7 & 8 students the opportunity to experience ‘a taste of” another language (French or Indonesian). The aim of the junior LOTE (Languages Other Than English) course is to familiarise students with the culture of the country, to enable them to comprehend spoken instructions and conversation in everyday situations and to be able to communicate freely and simply with others. Students will follow a specially designed program which covers a variety of topics, using a range of tasks (reading, writing, listening, speaking and viewing). Students will be given homework after each topic and will be required to complete research projects throughout the course.

Languages may also be studied as an elective course for the School Certificate.

French

‘ The world is our home, languages are the keys.’

French is one language offered as an elective in Year 9 and 10. French has been, by tradition, the language of diplomacy. It is an official language in a large number of international organisations including the United Nations Organisation, the European Union and the Olympic Games.

Through the study of French, students will experience and appreciate the richness and diversity of the art, cuisine, literature, film and music of French-speaking communities.

France, and our close neighbour New Caledonia, are some of the leading destinations for Australian travellers. The ability to communicate in French enriches this experience and provides students with opportunities for continued learning and for future employment, both domestically and internationally, in areas such as commerce, tourism, hospitality and international relations.

Learning another language is a skill for life and will open doors to a world of opportunity.
