Developing proficiency in English
enables students to be confident communicators, critical
and imaginative thinkers, lifelong learners and active
participants in Australian society. The knowledge,
skills and understanding acquired in English are central
to the learning and development of students at Kogarah
High School.
The main aim of the English Faculty is to develop clear
and precise skills in reading, writing, speaking,
listening, viewing and representing by engaging and
challenging students to maximise individual talents and
capabilities. By responding to and composing a wide
variety of texts, students learn about the power, value
and art of the English language for communication,
knowledge and pleasure.
The junior and senior English programs have been
developed to meet the requirements of the stages 4, 5
and 6 New South Wales, Board of Studies syllabuses
(http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/syllabus_sc/index.html#english)
and the needs of a clientele which is drawn from a
culturally diverse area where many students are from
non-English speaking backgrounds. For some, Kogarah High
School forms part of their earliest instruction in
English, while others are striving to extend their
mastery of the language.
