Target audience: Years 9 & 10

Due date: Solutions to the problem can be handed in to your Maths teacher any time during Week 3 but no later than Friday 16th May (3pm)

 

  Problem:                THE FOUR FOURS

 

Using nothing but the figure 4 four times, no more or no

less, derive all the numbers from 0 to 36.

 

Here are some examples:

 

              15 = 4 x 4 – 4/4

                           

19 = 4! – 4 – 4/4

                           

23 = 4(4!) – 4

                                 4

 

Note: 4! means “factorial 4” which is 4 x 3 x 2 x 1.

Ensure your solution shows full working (if necessary)

and has your name clearly on it.
