Kogarah High School P & C Association
Minutes of meeting held Monday18th June 2007 at 7pm
Attendance:

Minutes of previous meeting held on 14th May, 2007 carried.
Matters Arising:
Sewer Pipe – Letter Sent from President of P&C to Local Member, Cherie Burton regarding financial assistance to repair damaged sewer pipe in school grounds prior to development of undercover outdoor area for students. Fred Carosi has had conflicting stories from plumbers as to the degree of work to be carried out on the sewer pipe. Waiting for phone call to be returned.
Information meeting for parents to help support children going through adolescence is confirmed for 6th August 2007. Guest speaker Janice Killey.
School is consulting with Telstra to add extra capacity to phone switchboard.
Chaplaincy Funding – Violet explained that the Federal Government has made funds available to schools to provide chaplains for schools. Discussions at the P&C concluded that in a school such as Kogarah High with a diversity of religious faiths, a chaplain would not fulfill the needs of all students and it was recommended not to proceed with the application.
Guest Speaker Desnee Butler – School Mentor
Background – Seven years in school mainly teaches years 9 – 12, is a year advisor. Trained as a mentor in hospitality.
A mentor is someone a student can approach who will listen to a problem, helps with behaviour related problems, helps students with self confidence issues, learning difficulties supports students to plan how to get things done.
A mentor is not a school councillor, to which social and emotional problems are usually referred.
Principals Report:
It will be possible to post homework topics in the future if budget to upgrade website is approved.
Mid-year reports will be mailed from the school and received by parents during the school holidays.
Senior parent/ teacher reporting evening will be 21st June. Junior parent/ teacher reporting evening will be 19th July.
Very pleasing ELLA test placed Kogarah High at the top in the district for average growth in literacy.
Reminder to parents to continue to encourage children to read. School reading program exists until Year 9.
Parents warned of potential bullying on the internet and should check websites most frequently visited by their children. More information in the newsletter.
A new school brochure for prospective students has been created. Will be posted on the school website.
Youth Liaison Officer at Kogarah Police Station is working closed with Mr Carosi and can be scheduled for meetings as required.

General Business:
Fundraising discussed by parents as a means to pay for students on school excursions. School policy is that fundraising is used to support charities only.
Next Meeting:
6th August 2007. Guest speaker, Janice Killey on supporting children going through adolescence.
